According to Deloitte’s 2009 Survey of Health Care Consumers eight percent of 2009 respondents said they sought health care services outside their immediate community; over 40 percent said they would travel outside their immediate area for care if their physician recommended it or for a 50 percent cost savings; only 1 in 5 expressed concern about leaving the community based on a referral or potential to save costs.
Seattleite, and Sales and Marketing Executive, Torrey Russell saved $8,000 by going to Tijuana, Mexico for reconstructive dental surgery.
Live interview with the patient
“I had gone to India previously for hip surgery,” said Russell, “so medical tourism is not new to me. I decided to go to Mexico for the dental procedure when my local dentist, a wonderful man, quoted me $1,800 a tooth. That price was very expensive for me as a self-employed individual without insurance.”
